14 December 2011, New York, USA - : The 16th United Nations Correspondents Association (UNCA) Awards Dinner was held in New York Wednesday (Dec 14) evening to recognize excellence in media coverage of UN activities and outstanding personalities who have contributed to humanitarian efforts around the world in the past year. This year's event gave particular focus to malaria, as both Executive Director of the Roll Back Malaria (RBM) Partnership, Professor Awa Coll-Seck, and UN Special Envoy for Malaria, Ray Chambers, were awarded the prestigious UNCA Citizen of the Year award for their respective leadership and commitment to the fight against this treatable and preventable disease.
The UN Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, lauded both Professor Coll-Seck and Mr. Chambers for their significant contributions to global malaria control efforts as he presented their awards.

Malaria deaths are down but progress remains fragile
Launch of The World Malaria Report 2011
13 December 2011, Geneva, SWITZERLAND - : Malaria mortality rates have fallen by more than 25% globally since 2000, and by 33% in the WHO African Region, according to the World Malaria Report 2011, issued today by the World Health Organization. This progress is the result of a significant scaling-up of malaria prevention and control measures in the last decade, including the widespread use of bed nets, better diagnostics and a wider availability of effective medicines to treat malaria.

Malaria and AIDS Communities Call for Joint Programming

ETHIOPIA - : Global health Partners attending the 16th Conference on AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections in Africa – ICASA – have called upon policy makers to reap the enormous potential for synergies between malaria and HIV programmes. More than 7,000 participants from the HIV/AIDS, health and development communities are attending the conference, hosted in the Ethiopian Capital until Dec. 8.
The session on co-infection between malaria and HIV/AIDS at the 16th ICASA was convened by the Roll Back Malaria (RBM) Partnership and included speakers from UNAIDS, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria, Vestergaard Frandsen, CITAM+ and RAP+ Afrique Centrale.

RBM partner Novartis finds a new class of antimalarial drug candidates
17 November 2011, Basel, SWITZERLAND - : Novartis and collaborators announced today the discovery of a new dual-acting class of antimalarial compounds - the imidazolopiperazines (IZPs). While most current malaria treatments target blood infections, the new class of drug candidates inhibits both liver and blood infections in malaria models and has the potential to both prevent and treat the disease. The discovery was published in Science online, at the Science Express website today.

China hosts RBM's 21st Board meeting
16-18 November 2011 Wuxi, PR CHINA: - : In a three-day meeting, hosted by the government of the People's Republic of China, the Board of the RBM Partnership will discuss strategic priorities that will make the most pertinent contribution to achieving the targets and objectives of the Global Malaria Action Plan. The Board will also give strategic direction to RBM's efforts to mobilize additional resources, expand access to ACTs and contain emerging drug and insecticide resistance. The event will enable information exchange and discussions on China's achievement and best practice in malaria control, the challenges of controlling vivax malaria and the latest research on vaccines and drugs.

RBM partners commemorate Malaria Day in the Americas
8 November 2011, Washington D.C., USA - : Integration of malaria programs in health systems and malaria elimination in the countries of the Americas were commanding themes of a malaria forum, commemorating the 5th Annual Malaria Day in the Americas. Organized by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), the Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) and the George Washington University Center for Global Health (CGH), the forum gathered health authorities and experts, students, academicians, and the general public and honoured the winners of the 2011 Malaria Champions of the Americas contest.
In the Americas, malaria cases declined 54 percent and malaria deaths declined 68 percent between 2000 and 2009. Eighteen of the 21 endemic countries in the Americas have experienced declines, while three have seen increases in malaria cases.

RBM Harmonisation Working Group prepares for upcoming RBM Board meeting
27 October 2011, Geneva, SWITZERLAND - : Providing adequate financial and technical support to malaria-endemic countries in a challenging global economic context was a commanding theme of a two-day meeting held by RBM's Harmonisation Working Group (HWG) in Geneva. Participants reviewed progress against planned targets and endemic countries' needs for partner support, as well as discussed key strategic challenges and the role of HWG post 2011. The meeting generated consensus among RBM partners around key issues to be highlighted at the RBM Board meeting and inform plans for the way forward.

'Proud To Be' aims to raise public awareness of dangers of fake medicines
26 October 2011, Geneva, SWITZERLAND - : RBM applauds its Goodwill Ambassadors, South Africa's Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Senegal's Youssou N'Dour, for their engagement in INTERPOL's ongoing campaign to raise public awareness worldwide and in particular throughout Africa of the health risks, posed by counterfeit medicines. The two African singers will release a new song, entitled "Proud to be" under the auspices of INTERPOL tomorrow after a live performance by Yvonne Chaka Chaka in Nairobi. The first ever live public performance of "Proud to be" will gather senior government officials from Kenya and other countries in the region, in addition to representatives from international organizations and NGOs.

Wide-scale trial of malaria vaccine produces promising results
19 October 2011, Seattle, USA - : First results from a large-scale Phase III trial of RTS,S, published online yesterday in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), show the malaria vaccine candidate to provide young African children with significant protection against clinical and severe malaria with an acceptable safety and tolerability profile. The results were announced at the Malaria Forum hosted by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in Seattle, Washington.

RBM Applauds Liberia's President Sirleaf for Winning the Nobel Peace Prize - : The Roll Back Malaria Partnership congratulates the Deputy Chair of the African Leaders Malaria Alliance, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia on receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for 2011.
In addition to her remarkable work on peace, President Sirleaf made an important contribution to the fight against malaria. Under the stewardship of President Kikwete of Tanzania and President Sirleaf of Liberia, ALMA has grown to include 40 African countries and the African Union.
African leadership under the RBM umbrella has been a critical success factor in the fight against malaria over the past decade. Since year 2000, malaria deaths have decreased by 38% and 11 African countries have registered a decline of 50% or more in malaria mortality.

7th International Meeting of the RBM Procurement and Supply Chain Management Working Group (PSM7)
27 - 28 September 2011, Geneva, SWITZERLAND - : The 7th International Meeting of the RBM Procurement and Supply Chain Management Working Group (PSM7) took place on 27-28 September in Geneva. Over 40 participants from all over the world came together to discuss current challenges in supplying the most important malaria health products: ACTs, insecticides, LLINs and RDTs. The participants reviewed the implementation of the 2011 workplan and refined the 2012 workplan. For the first time we had the pleasure of welcoming the Innovative Vector Control Consortium (IVCC), represented by the IVCC Senior Executive Officer, Dr. Tom McLean.

Roll Back Malaria report heralds record success and anticipates near-zero malaria deaths in next decade if efforts sustained
12 September 2011, Paris, London - : A new report released today by the Roll Back Malaria Partnership
(RBM) finds that the world has made remarkable gains against malaria in the past ten years,
increasing optimism that an end to the disease is in sight. According to Roll Back Malaria Partnership:
A Decade of Partnership and Results, global malaria deaths have dropped by an estimated 38%, with
43 countries (11 of them in Africa) cutting malaria cases or deaths by 50% or more, reversing the
trend of the previous decade and saving over a million lives.

Anglophone West African countries elect RBM Board representatives
Two RBM Board members representing Anglophone West African countries were elected last week at a side event organized at the 61st WHO AFRO Regional Committee, held in Yamoussoukro (Côte d'Ivoire). Dr. Walter Gwenigale, Minister of Health of Liberia, was re-elected for a two-year term, while Mrs. Fatim Badjie, Minister of Health and Social Welfare for Gambia, was appointed as an alternate. In other side events, representatives from Francophone West African countries and Central African countries met with RBM Board representatives for their region to discuss malaria control challenges and how to meet 2015 targets.

RBM and WHO convene a Round Table on ACT Supply
8 September 2011, Geneva, SWITZERLAND - : The RBM-WHO Round Table on ACT Supply was convened to bring together all the major stakeholders to discuss the situation of ACT supply and to make recommendations to address any identified challenges.
The Round Table concluded that while there was no acute shortage of ACTs, the supply situation in the rest of 2011 could become tight in some local situations. The meeting was not complacent on this matter and requested (i) that a small management team under WHO leadership develop a risk management plan and monitor and address those local situations at risk, (ii) that the Roll Back Malaria PSM working group improve intelligence on ACT demand and supply and propose strategies and solutions for the medium and long term.
The meeting also warned against poorly informed statements about the situation which would only serve to increase the problem and a vicious cycle of price rises (similar to what happened in 2004/05) could
occur. The AMFm, Global Fund Voluntary Pooled Procurement and USPMI were congratulated on the open and transparent way they were publishing information on their orders and deliveries.

RBM prepares its work plan for 2012
5-7 September 2011, Geneva, SWITZERLAND - : Reaching the 2012-2013 milestones outlined in RBM's Global Malaria Action Plan will be the commanding theme of a three-day RBM Partnership planning meeting.
Participants will consolidate the outcomes and activities, proposed by the various Partnership mechanisms, and prepare RBM's workplan for implementation in 2012. The workplan will be submitted to the Board for approval in November 2011.

Updated country roadmaps now available
1 September 2011: - Countries are now in the process of updating their malaria roadmaps to reflect progress made in 2011. The roadmaps track expenditures and coverage of malaria interventions to help identify resource needs and coverage gaps. Eleven updated roadmaps are now available, with additional roadmaps expected in the coming months. The Roll Back Malaria Partnership is supporting the process through a series of training workshops in various African countries.

Harmonization Working Group Global Fund Round 11 Orientation Meeting
17-19 August 2011, Nairobi, KENYA: - At a training workshop, gathering participants from 13 African countries, RBM's Harmonisation Working Group (HWG) will support national efforts to develop funding proposals for malaria and apply for Global Fund's (GF) Round 11. The workshop targets countries that have confirmed their intention to apply for Round 11 (to date: Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Chad, Comoros, Ethiopia, Gabon, Mauritania, Niger, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Zanzibar). Participants in the workshop include national malaria control programme staff, PRs and SRs, CCM members, international and national consultants and key RBM partners.
The workshops, facilitated by the GF and RBM HWG partners, will share knowledge and teach practical skills for preparing Round 11 (R11) proposals and will inform applicants about major changes in the R11 process, as well as provide key technical and implementation updates. In particular, the workshops will provide an overview of the revised GF application materials including its logframe table; new approach to consolidation, new CCM guidelines, new eligibility criteria; prioritization; counterpart financing and performance framework. In addition, participants will receive technical support on proposal preparation in specific proposal components drawing on key lessons learned from previous rounds and addressing new challenges. Finally countries will work to plan their Round 11 process including timelines and resource requirements.
The Global Fund launched its 11th round on 15 August 2011. The round will close on 15 December 2011.

Vestergaard Frandsen donates bed nets to Côte d'Ivoire
29 July: - Vestergaard Frandsen has teamed up with Canadian NGO Right To Play and the Chelsea Football Club to donate 2500 bed nets to Chelsea footballer Didier Drogba's foundation in Côte d'Ivoire. The donation was announced on July 23 in Bangkok, Thailand during Chelsea's Asian nations summer tour. The bed nets, which bear Mr. Drogba's image, will be produced and delivered to the Côte d'Ivoire in time for the 2012 World Malaria Day. Vestergaard Frandsen will work with Chelsea and the Didier Drogba Foundation to distribute the nets in Côte d'Ivoire. A small donation of bed nets was also made on the same day to a local Thai charity working with disadvantaged youth in the country, for the purposes of preventing other vector-borne diseases like Dengue Fever.
Expanding access to malaria medicines in Africa requires an expanded role for African pharmacists
6 July, Dakar, SENEGAL: - Today, only five years from the internationally agreed deadline for achieving near-zero malaria deaths, the malaria community is at a crossroads. While net distribution and coverage reached record levels last year, most populations at risk of malaria still do not have access to safe and effective malaria medicines. The next few years therefore call for another massive international effort, this time focused on improving the availability of high-quality malaria drugs.

Case Management Working Group plans for 2012-2013
27 July, Geneva, SWITZERLAND: - The fifth meeting of the RBM Case Management Working Group (CMWG) got under way today in Geneva, drawing a range of representatives from national malaria control programmes, UN organizations, the private and public sector, and non-governmental organizations. The CMWG will focus on identifying key issues for 2012-2013, updating its workplan and improving its coordination with other RBM mechanisms.

An Africa-wide communications strategy will support GMAP's rollout
26-28 July, Nairobi, KENYA: - Representatives from more than 24 RBM partner organisations met today to develop a 5-year communications strategy for implementing the Global Malaria Action Plan. The strategy will focus on removing barriers to use of malaria commodities, which is key to achieving the international targets for reducing malaria deaths and cases. This two-day consultation has gathered a host of RBM partners, including PSI, UNICEF, URC, MNM, IFRC, C-Change, JHUCCP and ALMA, as well as representatives of the National Malaria Control Programmes in Burundi, Tanzania, DRC, Zambia, Comoros, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Uganda, Liberia and Kenya.

2015 Millennium Development Goals Within Reach, UN Says
Some of the world's poorest countries have made impressive gains in the fight against poverty, but the least developed countries still lag in efforts to improve living standards, the United Nations said in a report showing significant overall progress towards achieving the global targets against extreme poverty. Intensive control efforts have cut deaths from malaria by 20 per cent, with major advances in hard-hit African countries.

US Senate adopts bipartisan resolution honouring World Malaria Day
A bipartisan resolution introduced by the US Senate Working Group on Malaria passed the Senate unanimously on June 27, 2011. The resolution supports the goals and ideals of World Malaria Day and affirmed support for US leadership to combat malaria as a critical component of the President's Global Health Initiative. Concurrent resolutions are generally employed to address the sentiments of both chambers of the US legislative branch, but are not submitted to the President and thus do not have the force of law.

Malaria research and development: Staying the course?
28 June, London, UK: Staying the Course? Malaria Research and Development in a Time of Economic Uncertainty is a new technical report from the Roll Back Malaria Partnership — authored by Australia-based Policy Cures and commissioned by the PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative, Innovative Vector Control Consortium, Medicines for Malaria Venture, and the Foundation for Innovative Diagnostics — that shines a spotlight on recent trends in investments in malaria research and development (R&D). The report was launched at an event in the United Kingdom Parliament hosted by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases.
This new report follows up on a 2005 study by the Malaria R&D Alliance to establish a baseline of global investment for malaria R&D — and using even better and more complete data — this new report charts the global community's progress toward goals laid out in the 2008 Global Malaria Action Plan.
According to the new report, malaria R&D is no longer grossly underfunded. Ground-shifting advances have moved the dial toward elimination and possibly eradication. But these gains are fragile. Without continued, modest increases in funding in the next few years, this progress could be reversed.

Global Fund Partnership Forum
28-30 June, Sao Paolo, BRAZIL: - The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (Global Fund) convened its 2011 Partnership Forum in Sao Paolo, Brazil on June 28-30. Some 350 participants attended the Forum, representing diverse constituencies from each of the eight regions in which the Global Fund provides funding, and representatives from the Global North.
Among other topics covered, the Forum was an opportunity to provide inputs into the Global Fund strategy for 2012-2016. Representatives of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership Secretariat participated in the Forum, and reported that discussion on this item reflected a strong emphasis on partnership. Main themes included:
• Strategic partnerships: Using systematic approaches and drawing on the comparative advantages of partners to ensure drug and commodity availability, accessibility, affordability, and appropriateness. Most-at-risk populations need to be included in Global Fund processes at all levels and legal barriers need to be removed to ensure access of services.
• Sustaining gains: The importance of involving partners in helping countries in the pre-elimination phase reach the elimination phase by 2016.
• Developing an accountability framework: This involves operational types of agreements with partners, enhanced accountability mechanisms for partners at the Board level, 'surgical' revision of the accountability mechanism for country-coordinating mechanisms and ensuring that community-based accountability systems are in place.
• Integrating 'game changers': This includes a medicine patent pool, new diagnostic tools and other innovations to reduce drug prices and ensure the use of quality-assured drugs in Global Fund-financed grants.
• Strategic information systems: 10% of proposal budgets should be dedicated to strengthening strategic information systems, so that countries can make informed decisions on major issues affecting key populations.
• Human rights approaches: The establishment of civil society-based human rights watchdog mechanisms to ensure that the Global Fund is not funding country programmes that violate human rights.
In an early September 2011, the Partnership Forum Steering Committee (PFSC) will report the Forum's detailed outputs and recommendations -- mapped to one of three broad categories: operational policy, Comprehensive Plan for Reform, and inputs into the 2012-2016 Global Fund's strategy – which will be considered by the Board for inclusion in the Global Fund's strategy 2012 – 2016.

Antimalaria efforts must expand in a recovering global economy
A report on Zambia, released this week by the RBM Partnership adds to mounting evidence that current anti-malaria interventions are an effective means of saving child lives and improving health in malaria-endemic countries.
Paradoxically, however, today's successes in malaria control, can spell trouble for high-performing countries. An article, entitled "Solving the Sisyphean Problem of Malaria in Zanzibar" and published today in the Science magazine paints a realistic picture of the choices and challenges countries face once they significantly reduce their malaria burden.

African members of parliament focus on malaria at upcoming health forum
13-15 June 2011, Lusaka, ZAMBIA : - Members of parliament from across Africa gathered in Lusaka, Zambia for the second Parliamentary Forum on Malaria. The forum ran 13-15 June 2011, and focused on the critical role of parliamentarians in establishing health priorities and national health strategies to address malaria. The three-day event is a joint effort of the National Assembly and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Zambia, together with the Roll Back Malaria Partnership.

New Report Shows Zambia is Making Progress Against Malaria
14 June 2011, Lusaka, ZAMBIA : - Focus on Zambia, a new country report launched at the second Parliamentary Forum on Malaria on June 14 in Lusaka, shows that Zambia's increased efforts to control malaria are generating concrete results. Authored by the Zambian Ministry of Health and produced by the Roll Back Malaria Partnership, the report finds that scaling up malaria interventions has saved the lives of an estimated 33,000 children under five since 2001, with overall child mortality dropping by 29% between 2001/2002 and 2007.

SMS for Life wins Global Business Council award
The Global Business Council (GBC) announced last week that Novartis has won the Technology for Health award for its role in the SMS for Life programme, which has been using mobile phone and electronic mapping technology to prevent stock-outs of anti-malarial medicines in the United Republic of Tanzania. SMS for Life is a public-private partnership involving the Tanzanian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Novartis, Vodacom, Medicines for Malaria Venture, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and other partners, all operating under the umbrella of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership. Established in 2011, the Technology for Health award recognizes the use of new technologies or the application of existing ones in creative, ground-breaking ways to address malaria, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis.

Panel discussion highlights public-private partnership success in malaria control
3 June 2011, New York, USA : - A panel co-hosted by the Roll Back Malaria Partnership (RBM) and the World Bank brought together a range of public and private sector representatives at United Nations Headquarters in New York to discuss public-private partnerships (PPPs) in malaria control. The discussion underscored the importance of PPPs in achieving goals in the fight against malaria, while showcasing key successes and demonstrating why these partnerships are in the interest of all actors involved in malaria control.
Among the success stories highlighted by the panel were World Bank collaboration with Exxon Mobile Foundation to support countries under the Booster Program for Malaria Control, and Anglo Gold's integrated malaria control partnership in Obuasi, Ghana, which paved the way for the company to coordinate national scale-up as the first private company to take on the lead role for a Global Fund grant in Africa.

64th World Health Assemby calls on Member States to keep malaria high on development agenda and tackle drug resistance
The Health Assembly adopted a resolution on malaria calling on Member States to keep malaria high on the political and development agendas in order to sustain the tremendous gains made during the past decade, and calling on international partners to ensure adequate and predictable funding so that global malaria targets for 2015 can be met. The resolution highlighted the need for continued universal coverage with malaria vector control for at-risk persons, expanded access to diagnostic testing for suspected malaria and treatment for confirmed cases, and strengthened malaria surveillance systems. The need to implement the WHO Global Plan for Artemisinin Resistance Containment, and to develop a global plan for insecticide resistance management in malaria vectors, were also emphasized.

International School of Geneva pays visit to RBM-hosted Photographic Exhibition
72 children from the International School of Geneva were recently given a tour and Q&A session at the Malaria: blood, sweat, and tears photographic exhibition, being hosted by the RBM Secretariat until June 4th. Malaria: blood, sweat, and tears was conceived and produced by Malaria Consortium and photojournalist Adam Nadel to highlight the history, science and global impact of malaria. It was opened on May 4th by WHO Director-General, Dr Margaret Chan.
The group of 11-12 year-olds originated from a wide range of countries including malaria-endemic ones such as Kenya and Nigeria. They were fascinated by the exhibition and were eager to ask questions. They were particularly curious about how malaria is transmitted, what can be done to prevent the disease, and measures to be taken once someone is sick. The children all left with RBM materials to take home to their parents, many of whom work in the Geneva-based missions to the UN or in multinational companies.

India enforces ban on oral artemisinin-based monotherapies
A year after the call to action to remove oral artemisinin-based monotherapies from the market place, the Government of India is now taking decisive action to enforce export and production bans on these drugs. As of April 25, any company found to be manufacturing or exporting monotherapies will face immediate cancellation of its manufacturing license.
This action follows on the heels of India's 2008 decision to withdraw oral monotherapies from its market by July 2009. Until now, Indian companies have been the main source of monotherapies, which are contributing to a growing resistance against artemisinin, the drug currently used to fight malaria.

African Ministers of Health discuss key malaria issues at RBM Board meeting
13 May 2011, Geneva, SWITZERLAND: - African Ministers of Health and RBM Board members met this morning in a special RBM Board session to discuss key malaria issues, such as the banning of monotherapies, sustainable financing and the impact of Global Fund reform. In his closing remarks, the Honourable Stephen O'Brien noted that important strides forward had been made in malaria and praised the "enormous engagement and commitment" of African Ministers of Health.

Twentieth RBM Partnership Board Meeting Gets Underway in Geneva
11 May 2011, Geneva, SWITZERLAND: -The 20th RBM Partnership Board Meeting began on 11 May in Geneva. Some 100 Board members, delegates and representatives from across the RBM Partnership attended the meeting, which ran until May 13. The meeting focused on strategic ways forward for implementation of the Global Malaria Action Plan, overcoming challenges, and operational plans towards 2015 targets and objectives.
A Pre-Board Information Session allowed the participants to exchange experiences and views on current strategic issues, such as sustainable financing, health system strengthening, control in low endemicity settings, and others".

Francophone Ministers of Health in West Africa appoint new representatives for the Roll Back Malaria Board
6 May 2011, Lome, TOGO: -In a side event to the 12th Ordinary Meeting of the Assembly of ECOWAS Health Ministers, Togo and Côte d'Ivoire were appointed as new representatives to the Roll Back Malaria (RBM) Board. The two countries were elected by Ministers of Health from ten Francophone West African countries, in a session facilitated by the West African Health Association (WAHO) and the West Africa Roll Back Malaria Network (WARN). Board representatives from Anglophone West African countries will be elected by the end of 2011.

WHO Director-General opens photo exhibition to commemorate World Malaria Day - "without victory there is no survival"
4 May 2011, Geneva, SWITZERLAND: - The "Malaria: blood, sweat, and tears" photo exhibition was officially opened yesterday in Geneva by WHO Director-General Margaret Chan, Prof. Awa Coll-Seck (Executive Director of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership) and Sunil Mehra (Executive Director of the Malaria Consortium).
Accompanied by WHO Deputy Director-General Dr. Asamoa-Baah, Dr. Chan noted in her opening speech that the phrase "blood, sweat, toil, and tears" comes from a 1940 speech delivered by Winston Churchill to the House of Commons. "That speech was a battle call that rallied the troops. As Churchill stated, the aim must be victory, however long and hard the road may be, 'for without victory there is no survival'".
Some 90 people attended the ceremony, including ambassadors from Finland, Switzerland and the United States, embassy representatives from Brazil, Gabon and Tanzania, the Director of the WHO Global Malaria Programme, the Executive Directors of UNITAID, STOP TB and other Roll Back Malaria partners.
The multi-media photo exhibition by Adam Nadel is now accessible to the public and will continue until 15 May.

A round-table on the fight against malaria
27 April 2011, Paris, FRANCE: - A round-table on the fight against malaria was co-organized by the Roll Back Malaria Partnership and the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs in Paris on Wednesday, April 27. This event brought together 200 representatives of the malaria community in France (researchers, public and private sector, policy makers) and representatives of the diplomatic community in Paris.
Four panels reviewed progress and challenges at the global level, the impact of malaria on maternal and child health, access to malaria treatments, and the role of France in the fight against malaria. The meeting was brought to a close by Mr Henri de Raincourt, French Minister for Cooperation. The round-table together with an exhibition in the garden of the Luxembourg in Paris marked the commemoration of the Fourth World Malaria Day in France.

A display exhibition at the Jardin du Luxembourg
21-25 April 2011, Paris, FRANCE : - As part of the fourth World Malaria Day, the Roll Back Malaria Partnership and the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs have organized an event for the public at the Jardin du Luxembourg. This initiative is designed to raise awareness and inform the general public about the challenges and the progress made in the fight against malaria. As the mosquito net currently symbolizes the fight against malaria, this mosquito net display is designed to be both esthetic and educational. Those involved in the fight against malaria will be available to the public to answer their questions. Activities will be presented to raise awareness among the young and the adults as well: stories, scientific demonstrations, concerts… Visitors will be provided with two exhibitions. The first is intended to better understand malaria, to discover its many impacts and the solutions to prevent and treat the disease. The second consists of a photographic exhibition focusing on people's will to live and their desire to control malaria.

The Roll Back Malaria Partnership welcomes the United Nations General Assembly Resolution
18 April 2011, New Yorl, USA : - "Consolidating Gains and Accelerating Efforts to Control and Eliminate Malaria in Developing Countries, Particularly in Africa, by 2015" was adopted by consensus by the General Assembly.
The resolution urges Governments, together with United Nations agencies, private organizations and foundations, to accelerate efforts to achieve by 2015 the targets set out in Roll Back Malaria's Global Malaria Action Plan (GMAP) and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The adoption of the resolution by the General Assembly is a reminder of the work that needs to be done in order to meet these goals.
The resolution recognizes the progress made over the last year, while also calling upon endemic and donor countries to scale-up treatment and control programs. In the last ten years, 43 countries all over the world reduced their malaria cases by 50%; these include 11 countries in sub-Saharan Africa that have slashed malaria cases and deaths by more than 50%. In 2010, more than 229 million artemisinin-based combination treatments (ACTs) were procured worldwide, up from only 2.1 million ACTs in 2003. While celebrating these achievements, the resolution continues to call for an increase in committed resources for malaria, at a time when the GMAP is still facing a more than $3 billion dollar funding gap annually.

7 April, New York, USA: - The Roll Back Malaria Partnership hosted a briefing with Prof. Michel Kazatchkine, Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, at the UN in New York on 7 April. UN Member States and agencies were briefed on the results and impact of Global Fund work, recent challenges and the implementation of new financial safeguards. Prof. Kazatchkine also presented a reform agenda and strategies to enhance the Global Fund's effectiveness in the years ahead. In a Q&A period following the presentation, Member States made note of the good results and transparency of the Global Fund.

1-4 March 2011, Australia : - A delegation from the Roll Back Malaria Partnership (RBM) led by Professor Graham Brown, RBM Board Member and Foundation Director of the Nossal Institute for Global Health at the University of Melbourne visited Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney as part of an external relations tour in Australia. Advocating on the importance of malaria control, the delegation met with government authorities, the private sector and NGOs to discuss recent successes and upcoming challenges in malaria control and Australia's expanding international role in the fight against this preventable and treatable disease.
Australia is an important partner in the Asia-Pacific region and has seen recent achievements in their aid program in Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, where malaria incidence has decreased significantly. Further, Australia hosts many scientific experts devoted to advancing malaria control efforts and an engaged public and private sector. Coinciding with the RBM visit, Nando's Australia hosted an event to celebrate the success of the United Against Malaria campaign, which has sold 55 000 bracelets in Australia to support the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

1 March 2011, Washington DC, USA : - A newly formed Roll Back Malaria Partnership's Resource Mobilization Sub-Committee, chaired by Mr Alan Court, Office of the Special Envoy for Malaria of the United Nations Secretary General, and including members from bilateral donors, civil society, malaria endemic countries, foundations, multilateral organizations, the private sector and research partners, held its first meeting on 1 March 2011, hosted by the Gates Foundation in Washington DC.
The Sub-Committee has been established by the Board of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership to leverage the various partners' comparative advantages and guide the development of a coordinated resource mobilization strategy in support of the second phase of implementation of the Global Malaria Action Plan.
Working in synergy with other Roll Back Malaria mechanisms, the Sub-Committee will lead the review of resource needs and funding gaps, analyze different financing scenarios and provide guidance to the Partnership on the most effective way to join energies to mobilize adequate, predictable and sustainable resources for malaria control, prevention and elimination in the years ahead.

28 February to 4 march 2011, Ouagadougou, BURKINA FASO : - West Africa Roll Back Malaria Network (WARN) partners are meeting in Ouagadougou to review 2011 country support needs and to plan assistance to countries. WARN partners are also meeting with the Burkina Faso National Malaria Control Programme and the national RBM Partnership.

Work begins on new guidance framework for behaviour change communication
17 February 2011, Geneva, SWITZERLAND : - Roll Back Malaria partners working in Behavior Change Communication (BCC), vital to improve the uptake of all malaria interventions, met yesterday in Geneva to develop BCC guidelines for countries, the Global Fund and other donor agencies. Key next steps will include the development of indicators and best practices which can inform the preparation of upcoming Global Fund proposals, as well as training sessions for consultants, the Technical Review Panel and other partners.
Roll Back Malaria thanks Scott Case of Malaria No More for his important contribution
The Roll Back Malaria Partnership wishes to acknowledge Scott Case for his dedication to fighting malaria for over four years as CEO of Malaria No More. Through its innovative programmes and advocacy work Malaria No More has helped to raise awareness of malaria, particularly in the United States. In addition to building partnerships and providing technical support, Malaria No More has distributed 2.6 million insecticide-treated nets in 13 African countries, covering over 5 million people. We wish Scott every success in his new role at the Startup America Partnership.

Alliance for Malaria Prevention partners count their success stories, discuss challenges
10-11 February 2011, Geneva, SWITZERLAND : - At a meeting organized by the Alliance for Malaria Prevention, a workstream of the Roll Back Malaria Harmonization working group, over 100 representatives from partner organizations reviewed successes and established future research priorities. Participants focused on producing a clearer definition of universal coverage and on ways to increase the coverage and use of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs). Discussion also covered successes in behaviour change communication, monitoring and evaluation and scaling up LLIN coverage, with participants reviewing in-depth examples from six African countries.

High-level consultation explores the possible removal of taxes and tariffs on malaria products
9 February 2011, Geneva, SWITZERLAND : - African Union ambassadors, Ministers of Health and representatives from 26 countries met with members of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership Secretariat and the Malaria Taxes and Tariffs Advocacy Project (M-TAP) to discuss progress and challenges to eliminating trade barriers on antimalarial products.
Participants examined issues related to taxes, tariffs and non-tariff barriers, and explored options for their removal. M-TAP will continue the discussion through upcoming in-country workshops and will develop country-specific materials to support further advocacy on this issue.
M-TAP is a two-year evidence-gathering and policy advocacy initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

RBM Partners meet to shape future advocacy strategies on malaria
8-9 February 2011, Geneva, SWITZERLAND : - Nearly 40 participants representing Partner organizations are meeting in Geneva, at WHO headquarters, for the Seventh RBM Malaria Advocacy Working Group (MAWG) meeting. Consultations are focusing on the review of the MAWG 2011 Workplan, on Partners' roles and responsibilities in the effective implementation of the Workplan and on the future advocacy strategies.

Vector Control Working Group plans for 2011 at 6th annual meeting
7-9 February 2011, Geneva, SWITZERLAND : - At its largest meeting to date, 120 members of the Roll Back Malaria Vector Control Working Group (VCWG) gathered to discuss current and emerging issues on global malaria vector control. Representing a range of regions, national programmes and organizations, participants reviewed progress made to date by the working group's eight workstreams. A work plan for 2011 was also established, to be coordinated with WHO's Global Malaria Programme and partners.

Sixth RBM Procurement and Supply Chain Management Working Group Meeting
3-4 February 2011, Geneva, SWITZERLAND : - The RBM Procurement and Supply Chain Management working group held a two-day meeting that concluded today. Participants discussed issues around forecasting and quantification, pharmacovigilance, ACT and artemisinin mapping, country bottlenecks, and the use of cell phones to prevent and monitor drug stock-outs. Updates were provided on the Global Fund Market Dynamic Committee, the Affordable Medicines Facility for malaria, WHO's procurement guidelines for Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs) and the next round of RDT testing. Important topics of discussion also included implications of insecticide resistance for procurement and supply; routine net distribution and replacement; and the role of the PSMWG for Global Fund Round 10/11 support.

African leaders attend malaria working session at 16th African Union Summit
31 January, Addis Ababa, ETHIOPIA : - At a working session held during the 16th African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, African leaders heard that although the world is on the verge of defeating malaria, redoubled efforts are needed to "get to the finish line". Organized by the African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA), the meeting brought together a range of participants, including African heads of state and the UN Secretary-General. Liberia President Ellen Sirlief Johnson was elected as Deputy Chair of ALMA, and Awards for Excellence were presented to Guinea, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

16th Monitoring & Evaluation Reference Group (MERG) meeting
30 January - 4 February 2011, Siem Reap, CAMBODIA : - The 16th MERG meeting was held in Siem Reap, Cambodia. The meeting focused on surveillance best practices outside the African Region and reviewed current monitoring and evaluation indicators in view of providing guidance for scale up and beyond. The visit to South East Asia included a field trip to Pailin to look at the Artemisinin resistance containment project on the Thailand-Cambodia border.

Gender advocates meet before African Union Summit
26 January 2011, Addis Ababa, ETHIOPIA : - At a consultative meeting on gender mainstreaming, held in the margins of the African Union Summit, participants explored the manifold links between gender, violence, health, climate justice and the social economy. Organized by Femmes Afrique Solidarité in partnership with the International Labour Organization, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, and the Mary Robinson Foundation for Climate Justice, the meeting brought together more than 100 gender advocates and experts from a wide variety of sectors, who developed a common advocacy agenda to encourage African leaders to do more on gender equality.
Speakers included Mrs Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland, and Mrs Gertrude Mongella, former President of the Pan-Africa Parliament. At the session on gender and climate change, the Roll Back Malaria Partnership was held up as a good example of partnership and coordination, with the suggestion that its successful practices be considered for replication in the area of climate justice.

Rethinking Malaria Leadership Forum at Harvard University
19 January 2011, Boston, USA : - Harvard University convened a Leadership Forum on "Rethinking Malaria" on 18-19 January in Boston, US. The two-day Forum brought together leaders from a variety of sectors including academia, business, government and NGOs to discuss recent successes, shortcomings and challenges in malaria control and eradication. The interactive forum drew upon the knowledge and experience of Harvard faculty, business leaders and global health experts, who collectively identified strategies aimed at removing obstacles to malaria control and eradication. Prof. Awa Marie Coll-Seck, RBM Executive Director, led a panel on how to translate global aspirations to the local level.

Urgent Global Plan for Artemisinin Resistance Containment Launched by WHO
12 January 2011, Geneva, SWITZERLAND : - The Global Plan for Artemisinin Resistance Containment released today by the World Health Organization(WHO) and Roll Back Malaria partnership (RBM) outlines the necessary actions to prevent the development and spread of drug resistant parasites. The new action plan outlines ways to contain and prevent resistance to artemisinins, which are the critical component of artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs), the most potent weapon in treating deadly falciparum malaria. Resistance to artemisinins has already emerged in areas on the Cambodia-Thailand border. Although ACTs are currently more than 90% efficacious around the world, quick action is essential. If these treatments fail, many countries will have nothing to fall back on.

RBM country support facilitation team reviews country progress and prepares for 2011
10-14 January 2011, Geneva, SWITZERLAND : - The RBM Country Support Facilitation Team are meeting to review the progress achieved in 2010 by the sub-regional networks (SRNs) and to prepare the effective implementation of the SRN 2011 workplans. This involves agreeing roles and responsibilities, reviewing grant management, and strategizing on how to best support countries through discussions with funds and bilateral donors.
